Android Smart Power Monitor Demo

Using the ITEAD BT Debugging Assistant, you can make your Android cell phone to connect to Arduino boards with our BT shield or BTBee module.  The “ITEAD BT Debugging Assistant” software is open source, by some small modification, you can build  a simple control client on your android cell phone.

We are building a smart home system and here we’d like to show you a small demo of using the cell phone to monitor a power adapter.

This small prototyping board has a current sensor, an BT module and a relay. It can be use to monitor the current passed the power adapter and the voltage on it. Using the sample relay, we can switch the power adapter just by a digital pin of Arduino boards.

Here is a simple communication protocol for this demo, when the cell phone send “Q”, it can get the prototype board hardware and firmware version reply from the board. When the phone send “P” it get the instantaneous power value of the device which on power adapter. When send the “E” or “S”, the relay closes or uncloses.

The device will send the command to check the power each second, and display it on the phone. The software also will show you the total electricity consumption. Press the “Clean” button you can clean the power flow table, long press will clean the total electricity consumption. By clicking the “On”/”Off” button, you can power on the device or turn it off. In setting menu, you can change the display data, not just the power, but you can  change to current or voltage show.

The time scale also can be modify in setting menu, you can change it into “10s”, “1min” or “10min”.

We get some feedback of the ITEAD BT Debugging Assistant bugs, now these bugs have been fixed, the version you download now is the new 1.0.1 one.

The software and source code of this demo will not release now, because we are still improving it. We’d like to build not just a demo but a whole small home control client. We are also looking for partners for this open source project, keep following us and soon we will release some more post about it.
