DIY Intelligent Monitor for Home Temperature & Humidity

In the previous two blogs, we introduced how to build a gateway for intelligent home and how to make an intelligent power socket. With the gateway, by connecting a variety of sensors to it, we can achieve the goal of remote home monitor. In this blog, we will build a "DIY intelligent monitor to detect home temperature and humidity", so that you can check real-time home temperature and humidity in anywhere.

Here we will use Iteaduino UNO and its customized IR shield as controller for the gateway, and they are very easy to operate.

We need the following components:

Iteaduino UNO X 1
IR shield X1
– Nrf24L01+ module X1
– Micro USB cable X1
– 9V or 12V 1A adapter

Plug nRF24L01 module into the corresponding interface on IR shield, and then connect the shield to UNO board. The circuit diagram is shown as below:

Writing control program

First we need to download the following library functions, and the downloading links are:



SHT1x: https://github.com/practicalarduino/SHT1x

After downloading the library functions, extract them into folder Arduino-1.0.5/libraries.

Temperature and humidity firmware needed in the experiment can be downloaded here:


Steps for installing the driver are as follows:

  1. plug the USB cable to UNO board
  2. right click on Computer on descktop, and then click Manage
  3. click on the Device Manager, USB Serial Port will appear under the port COM 
  4. right click USB Serial Port, and then click "manually install the driver software"
  5. click "Browse my computer for driver software"
  6. select directory of the Downloaded drivers, choose arduino->drivers
  7. click Next to complete the driver installation

Upgrading temperature and humidity firmware (free to modify the source code to implement the functions you want)

  1. after opening arduino software, select Tools-> Serial Port-> COMX (the X is the UNO's COM number in device manager)
  2. select Tools-> Board-> Arduino UNO
  3. open the temperature and humidity firmware via Arduino software
  4. uploard the program to UNO mainboard. When the green progress bar is done and Done uploading is displayed, it indicates successful uploarding.

Connect to Ethernet to have a test:

  1. Connect UNO board with 9V or 12V power adapter
  2. ensure the gateway is running normally. Open the intelligent maker control terminal m.znck007.com with a smart phone or web browser, then login to your account
  3. enter into home state, and click on the "home temperature" or "humidity", you can see the information of home temperature or humidity
