Intelligent Power Socket

In the previous blog, we’ve introduced how to build a gateway for intelligent home. Based on the gateway we’ve built, in this blog we will use our new product Iteaduino mini RBoard to demonstrate how to make a "DIY intelligent power socket", so that you can control the state of socket switch at any time and realize remote controlling various appliances.

Compared to its original model Rboard, Mini Rboard with a small size has built-in a relay, a nRF24L01 interface and a 433M RF Receiver interface. Let's see how we use it to make an intelligent socket!

Components we need:

Components Assembly

Plug NRF24L01 module and FOCA module into the corresponding interfaces on mini RBoard respectively. The circuit diagram is shown below:

Writing control program

First we need to download the following library functions, and the downloading links are:

The socket control firmware can be downloaded here.

After downloading the library functions, extract them into folder Arduino-1.0.5/libraries.

Steps for installing the driver are as follows:

  1. plug the mini USB cable to FOCA, switch to 3.3V
  2. right click Computer on desktop, and then click Manage
  3. click on the Device Manager, USB Serial Port will appear under the port COM
  4. right click USB Serial Port, and then click “manually install the driver software”
  5. click "Browse my computer for driver software."
  6. select directory of the Downloaded drivers, choose arduino-> drivers
  7. click Next to complete the driver installation

Add Device ID:

  1. login account in m.znck007.com, click on the "intelligent switch"
  2. click on "Add a new socket", fill in a new name such as "Switch"
  3. check the list, click on the Switch option you’ve made, then you can see its sid and nid parameter, which is what you need to modify in the program later

Upgrading Switch firmware (free to modify the source code to implement the functions you want)

  1. after opening arduino software, select Tools-> Serial Port-> COMX(The X is the FOCA's COM number in device manager)
  2. select Tools-> Board-> Arduino Duemilanove w/ATmega328
  3. open socket firmware through arduino software
  4. modify sid and nid parameter in the program in order to suit them to your account.
  5. plug FOCA into the Rboard interface, and upload the program into Rboard. When the green progress bar is done and Done uploading is displayed, it indicates successful downloading

Connect Mini Rboard to Socket:

  1. Take apart power socket, find the live line and null line. Connect one end of 220V to 5V power transform module with those two lines.
  2. pull out the control lines of socket switch (as the control lines are not long enough, we’ve extended them by other two wires), then make these control lines connect with NO and COM ports of mini Rboard.
  3. for the other end of 220V to 5V power transform module, connect it to GND and 5V ports of mini Rboard through two wires.
  4. put mini Rboard inside and ressemble the power socket.

Finally, connect light pipe plug to socket, thus an intelligent power socket is done.

Connect Ethernet to have a test:

  1. ensure the gateway we’ve built is working.
  2. open the intelligent maker control terminal m.znck007.com with a smart phone or web browser, and login to your account.
  3. click on the "switch" icon in "intelligent switch". When the icon turns from "OFF" to "ON", you can see the light tube light up. When the icon turns from "ON" to "OFF", light will go out.
